Academics

In addition to information from formal assessments, The Y.A.L.E. Schools base academic instruction on information gathered from daily or weekly assessments of students' progress. These frequent assessments, known as formative assessments, help determine the effectiveness of instruction and each student's current levels. Because information is current, instruction can be modified to meet each student’s current needs and levels of functioning, thus avoiding instruction that is either too easy or is frustrating.

To meet each student's current needs, our teachers match formative assessment information to evidence-based instructional methods such as:

  • Direct instruction
  • Peer-mediated instruction
  • Strategy instruction
  • Small interactive groups
  • Specialized reading methods
