Y.A.L.E. School North: Medford Lakes

The Y.A.L.E. School North is located in Medford Lakes, NJ. It provides a full-year, full-day educational program to students with Asperger's syndrome. Classes are open to students ages 8 to 14 years. Students attend either the Nokomis or Neeta school.

Each Y.A.L.E. North class provides a supportive environment that focuses on meeting each student's unique educational needs.

  • Every classroom is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning technology
  • Students follow specially developed schedules to maximize their learning.
  • Classes and student-teacher ratios are low, giving teachers and staff the time and structure needed to provide individualized instruction.
  • Virtually every lesson and activity focuses on developing academic, social, and communication abilities. This includes specially designed small-group instruction.
  • Throughout the day, teachers and staff emphasize pragmatic language instruction. When appropriate, they also employ highly individualized motivational systems.
  • Social and communication abilities are systematically reinforced and extended through frequent trips and community activities. This includes community-based physical education.

School supervisors and Y.A.L.E.'s instructional staff systematically use scientifically-based instructional and counseling methods as a framework for instructing students with Asperger's syndrome. Staff consistently review the emerging literature to ensure they employ best practices. Consistent with Y.A.L.E.'s principles, students' goals are measured objectively and frequently and performance data are graphed daily. Changes to a student's instruction and services are based on data trends, clinical conferences, parent conferences, and IEP requirements.

To ensure that instructional staff are effectively meeting students' needs, Y.A.L.E. North's staff receive ongoing supervision, training, coaching, and consultation.

To help parents and guardians better understand and support their children, Y.A.L.E. stresses school-family collaboration. To faciliate this, Y.A.L.E. North provides parents and guardians with many services, including:

  • Consultation and training
  • Detailed progress reports
  • Ongoing updates from teachers
  • Support groups
